Instead of …

-는 대신에 after a verb means “instead of doing …”. After a noun it's N 대신(에): 커피 대신에 차. With an adjective, -(으) 대신에 means “…, but to make up for it”: 작은 대신에 싸요 — “it's small, but it's cheap”.
