V-(으)ㄹ 거예요

Plans — going to …

For plans and the future: after a vowel add -ㄹ 거예요, after a consonant -을 거예요. 하다 verbs become 할 거예요. The question 뭐 할 거예요? is how Koreans ask about plans.

ends in a vowel-ㄹ 거예요가다 → 갈 거예요 · 보다 → 볼 거예요
ends in a consonant-을 거예요먹다 → 먹을 거예요 · 읽다 → 읽을 거예요
하다 verbs할 거예요공부하다 → 공부할 거예요

  • 내일 친구를 만날 거예요.

    I'm going to meet a friend tomorrow.

V-(으)러 가요 / 와요

Going somewhere to do something

-(으)러 gives the reason you go or come: 보러 가요 — “I'm going (in order) to see”. After a vowel add -러, after a consonant -으러. It only works with verbs of going and coming.

ends in a vowel-러보다 → 보러 가요
ends in a consonant-으러먹다 → 먹으러 가요

  • 그림을 보러 박물관에 가요.

    I'm going to the museum to see a painting.

  • 밥을 먹으러 식당에 가요.

    I'm going to a restaurant to eat.

  • 한국어를 배우러 한국에 왔어요.

    I came to Korea to learn Korean.

And then

-고 links two actions in order: first this, then that. Only the last verb carries the tense — the -고 verb stays plain.

  • 박물관에 가고 노래방에 가요.

    We go to the museum and then to the noraebang.

  • 밥을 먹고 커피를 마실 거예요.

    I'm going to eat and then have coffee.

  • 공부하고 잤어요.

    I studied and then went to bed.

못 V

Can't

안 is “don't” — your choice. 못 is “can't” — you'd like to, but you're unable. It goes in the same place as 안, including between a noun and 하다.

  • 일요일에는 못 만나요.

V/A-지 않아요

The long negative

-지 않아요 means the same as 안, added to the stem instead of placed in front. It sounds a little more careful, and it works with every verb, including noun + 하다 verbs.

  • 박물관은 멀지 않아요.

    The museum isn't far.

  • 저는 커피를 마시지 않아요.

    I don't drink coffee.

  • 주말에는 일하지 않아요.

    I don't work at weekends.

Fix Hoya’s mistakes

Hoya wrote these. Each has one mistake — the kind a sensible learner makes. Say the fixed sentence before you check.

  • Write “It isn't far”.

    Hoya wrote 멀지 안아요.

    멀지 않아요.

    The long negative is spelled 않아요, with the double final ㄶ. 안아요 means “I hug”. They sound the same, so this one lives in your spelling.

  • Say “I'm going to see a film”.

    Hoya wrote 영화를 봐러 가요.

    영화를 보러 가요.

    -(으)러 goes on the stem 보, not on the 해요 form 봐.

  • Say “I can't study today”.

    Hoya wrote 오늘은 못 공부해요.

    Show the fix

    오늘은 공부 못 해요.

    Like 안, 못 goes right before 하다 in noun + 하다 verbs.
