I study Korean every day

  • Ask what someone is doing
  • Say where you do something
In native review 7 parts · about 30 minutes
Sori asks Hoya about his day. He sleeps a lot.

Part 1

Hoya's study routine

Listen first. Then hide the English and read along. Then use Shadow: Sori or Hoya says a line, you say it back.

    호야 씨, 지금 뭐 해요?

Hoya, what are you doing now?

  2. Hoya

    한국어를 공부해요.

    I'm studying Korean.

  3. Sori

    와, 매일 공부해요?

Wow, do you study every day?

  4. Hoya

    네, 매일 한국어를 공부해요.

Yes, I study Korean every day.

  5. Sori

    어디에서 공부해요?

    Where do you study?

  6. Hoya

    도서관에서 공부해요.

    I study at the library.

  7. Sori

    도서관에서 책을 많이 읽어요?

Do you read a lot of books at the library?

  8. Hoya

    음… 도서관에서 많이 자요.

Um… I sleep a lot at the library.

  9. Sori

    호야 씨!

    Hoya!

  10. Hoya

저는 카페에 자주 가요. 카페에서 커피를 마셔요.

I often go to a café. I drink coffee there.

  11. Sori

    카페에서는 공부해요?

And at the café, do you study?

  12. Hoya

    아니요. 카페에서 자요.

No. I sleep at the café.

Part 2

Grammar

5 patterns, each with the rule and examples you can hear.

1

V/A-아요/어요

The everyday polite ending

Take the dictionary form, drop 다, and look at the last vowel of what's left (the stem). If it is or , add -아요. Anything else, add -어요. When the stem ends in a vowel, the two vowels often merge into one syllable. The same form is used for statements and questions — only the intonation changes.

last vowel ㅏ or ㅗ-아요앉다 → 앉아요 · 좋다 → 좋아요
any other vowel-어요먹다 → 먹어요 · 읽다 → 읽어요
vowels mergeshort form가다 → 가요 · 오다 → 와요 · 마시다 → 마셔요 · 배우다 → 배워요
  • 친구를 만나요.

    I meet a friend.

  • 밥을 먹어요.

    I eat (a meal).

  • 텔레비전을 봐요.

    I watch TV.

2

하다 → 해요

Every 하다 verb

Hundreds of Korean verbs are a noun + 하다: 공부 (study) + 하다 = to study. All of them become 해요. Learn this one and you have them all.

  • 매일 운동해요.

    I exercise every day.

  • 회사에서 일해요.

    I work at a company.

  • 집에서 요리해요.

    I cook at home.

3

N을/를

The object

을/를 marks what the action is done to: 을 after a consonant, 를 after a vowel. In quick speech it is often dropped (커피 마셔요), but write it while you learn.

ends in a consonant책을 · 밥을
ends in a vowel커피를 · 영화를
  • 커피를 마셔요.

    I drink coffee.

  • 책을 읽어요.

    I read a book.

  • 한국어를 배워요.

    I learn Korean.

4

N에서

Where something happens

에서 marks the place where you do something. Compare 에: that's for where something is (Unit 3) and where you go (below).

where you do something에서도서관에서 공부해요
where something is도서관에 있어요
where you go도서관에 가요
  • 카페에서 커피를 마셔요.

I drink coffee at a café.

  • 집에서 쉬어요.

    I rest at home.

  • 공원에서 운동해요.

    I exercise in the park.

5

N에 가요 / 와요

Going and coming

The place you go to or come to takes 에. 가요 is “go”, 와요 is “come” — towards where the speaker is.

  • 학교에 가요.

    I go to school.

  • 친구가 집에 와요.

A friend comes to my house.

  • 어디에 가요?

    Where are you going?

Part 5

Fix Hoya’s mistakes

Hoya wrote these. Each has one mistake — the kind a sensible learner makes. Say the fixed sentence before you check.

  • Say “I eat”.

    Hoya wrote 밥을 먹아요.

    Show the fix

    밥을 먹어요.

The stem 먹 has the vowel , so it takes -어요. -아요 is only for and .

  • Say “I drink coffee”.

    Hoya wrote 커피을 마셔요.

    Show the fix

    커피를 마셔요.

커피 ends in a vowel, so the object marker is 를.

  • Say “I go to school”.

    Hoya wrote 학교에서 가요.

    Show the fix

    학교에 가요.

Where you go takes 에. 에서 is for the place where you do something.

Part 6

Hoya's day

Sori asked Hoya to write about his day. He was honest. Read it yourself first; tap a line to see its meaning, or listen to Hoya read it.

Check your reading

  1. Where does Hoya learn Korean?

  2. What does Hoya do at the library?

Part 7

Write about your day in five sentences.
