V-고 싶어요

I want to …

Add -고 싶어요 straight to the stem: 먹다 → 먹고 싶어요. There's no vowel rule to think about. Ask “what do you want to …?” with 뭐: 뭐 먹고 싶어요? For “I wanted to”, it's -고 싶었어요.

  • 비빔밥 먹고 싶어요.

    I want to eat bibimbap.

  • 한국에 가고 싶어요.

    I want to go to Korea.

  • 뭐 마시고 싶어요?

    What would you like to drink?

V-(으)세요

Please do …

A polite request. After a vowel add -세요, after a consonant add -으세요. You already know one: 주세요 is 주다 + 세요. For eating and drinking there's a special, extra-polite verb: 드세요.

ends in a vowel-세요가다 → 가세요 · 주다 → 주세요
ends in a consonant-으세요앉다 → 앉으세요 · 읽다 → 읽으세요
eating and drinking드세요맛있게 드세요 — enjoy your meal

V-(으)ㄹ까요?

Shall we …?

A suggestion, or asking the other person's opinion. After a vowel add -ㄹ까요?, after a consonant -을까요?. The usual yes is 네, 좋아요.

ends in a vowel-ㄹ까요?가다 → 갈까요? · 보다 → 볼까요?
ends in a consonant-을까요?먹다 → 먹을까요? · 앉다 → 앉을까요?

  • 뭐 먹을까요?

    What shall we eat?

  • 같이 영화 볼까요?

    Shall we watch a film together?

  • 몇 시에 만날까요?

    What time shall we meet?

N하고 (같이)

With someone

하고 after a person means “with”: 친구하고 — with a friend. 같이 (together) often follows it. Ask “with whom?” with 누구하고.

  • 친구하고 같이 밥을 먹어요.

    I eat with a friend.

  • 누구하고 같이 가요?

    Who are you going with?

  • 소리쌤하고 같이 냉면을 먹고 싶어요.

    I want to have cold noodles with Sori-ssaem.

Fix Hoya’s mistakes

Hoya wrote these. Each has one mistake — the kind a sensible learner makes. Say the fixed sentence before you check.

  • Say “I want to eat”.

    Hoya wrote 먹으고 싶어요.

    먹고 싶어요.

    -고 싶어요 goes straight onto the stem. There is no 으 in it.

  • Tell a guest “Please sit here”.

    Hoya wrote 여기 앉아세요.

    Show the fix

    여기 앉으세요.

    -(으)세요 goes on the stem 앉, not on the 해요 form 앉아. After a consonant, add 으.

  • Suggest watching a film.

    Hoya wrote 영화 보을까요?

    영화 볼까요?

    보 ends in a vowel, so it takes -ㄹ까요: 볼까요. -을까요 is only after a consonant.
