-(으)ㄹ 리가 없다
There's no way…
Use -(으)ㄹ 리가 없다 when something is impossible to believe: “there's no way that…”. 리 means reason or logic, so it is literally “there is no logic by which…”. For the past, use -았/었을 리가 없다. The short reply 그럴 리가 없어요 means “That can't be right.”
| When | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ends in a vowel | -ㄹ 리가 없다 | 오다 → 올 리가 없어요 |
| ends in a consonant | -을 리가 없다 | 먹다 → 먹을 리가 없어요 |
| past | -았/었을 리가 없다 | 잊다 → 잊었을 리가 없어요 |
