-(으)ㄴ/는 가운데
Amid, while (a situation goes on)
가운데 means “the middle”. -(으)ㄴ/는 가운데 sets up a background situation that is going on while the main event happens — “amid”, “with … going on”. It is common in news, speeches and history writing. Add 에도 or 서도 for “even amid”.
