-기 때문에
Because…
-기 때문에 gives a reason. It is a little firmer than -아서/어서 and common in writing. Add it to the stem; for the past, -았/었기 때문에. With a noun, N 때문에 means “because of N”, while N이기 때문에 means “because it is N”. It can't lead into a suggestion or a request — for those, use -(으)니까.
| When | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| verbs and adjectives | -기 때문에 | 바쁘다 → 바쁘기 때문에 · 좋다 → 좋기 때문에 |
| past | -았/었기 때문에 | 배우다 → 배웠기 때문에 · 오다 → 왔기 때문에 |
| because of + noun | N 때문에 | 비 때문에 · 시험 때문에 |
| because it is + noun | N이기 때문에 | 학생이기 때문에 · 친구이기 때문에 |
