V-다가

While doing … (then something else)

In native review Taught in Unit 5: I almost missed the bus

-다가 means you were in the middle of one action when something else happened, or when you switched to something else: 뛰어가다가 호떡 가게를 봤어요. The subject of both parts is usually the same. The tense goes at the end of the sentence, not on -다가.

Examples

  • 정류장으로 뛰어가다가 호떡 가게를 봤어요.

    I was running to the bus stop when I saw a hotteok stall.

  • 버스에서 졸다가 한 정거장을 지나쳤어요.

    I dozed off on the bus and went a stop too far.

  • 공부하다가 잠이 들었어요.

    I fell asleep while I was studying.
