생기다 is about someone's features — the face they were born with — and it is almost always in the past form: 착하게 생겼어요, “she has a kind face”. Compare 피곤해 보여요, which is how someone looks right now. 잘생기다 (good-looking) and 못생기다 (not good-looking) are single words.
