Turning a verb into a noun
Taught in Level 2, Unit 3: Hobbies
hobbies are activities, not things — 'hiking', 'cooking', 'napping'. To say 취미가 뭐예요? — 등산이에요 you need a way to make any verb behave like a noun, so that 좋아해요, 잘해요 and 시작해요 can take it.
Example
제 취미는 요리하는 거예요.
My hobby is cooking.
