Only if … — a condition that has to be met

Taught in Level 5, Unit 5: Anna's application

application rules are a chain of 'only if' — only if your papers pass is there an interview; only if you read the lab pages will you see why this school. You know -아/어야 하다 ('must', L2-U05). Cut 하다 off and join a second clause, and -아/어야 becomes the 'only if' condition; 만 makes it stricter.

Example

  • 서류 심사를 통과해야만 면접을 볼 수 있습니다.

You can be interviewed only if you pass the document screening.
