-게 되다 is the ending for verbs. For 'it got colder', 'the room got brighter', 'I got better' — the words are adjectives, and adjectives usually change with a different ending.
Example
가을이 되어서 날씨가 쌀쌀해졌어요.
Autumn came, and the weather has turned chilly.
