Korean grammar · Level 5

N에 달하다 · N에 그치다

Reaching N · stopping at only N — reading the size of a number

Taught in Level 5, Unit 3: Prices up, pay the same

news never gives a bare number. It tells you how to feel about it — that it is surprisingly large or disappointingly small. Junho does it to his own spending (a hundred thousand won!) and to his views (only two hundred). The two verbs that carry that judgement are 달하다 and 그치다.

Example

  • 이번 행사에 참가한 사람은 오천 명에 달했다.

The number of people who took part in the event reached five thousand.
