Taught in Level 3, Unit 7: While I was travelling
at Level 2 you learned -(으)ㄹ 때 for 'when'. A journey is made of stretches of time — two hours on a train, a week in a city — and 'when' cannot say 'the whole time'. -는 동안 can.

친구가 샤워하는 동안 저는 지도를 봤어요.
While my friend was taking a shower, I looked at the map.
