In doing, for doing — how long, how much, how helpful
Taught in Level 3, Unit 12: Chuseok at Sori's pine tree (Level 3 review)
the letter says the great-grandmother learnt to write, and the grandmother's question is how long learning Hangul took. Korean answers 'how long it takes, what you need, what it costs, what it helps' with a verb plus the noun 데. You will need it as soon as you talk about anything you do.
Example
요리를 배우는 데 한 달쯤 걸렸어요.
It took about a month to learn to cook.
