your Level 3 stories have causes, results and near misses. The last piece is the result that goes against a fact: 'I did exactly what Grandma did, and it still came out too big'. -지만 only says 'but'; -(으)ㄴ/는데도 says 'even though that is true, still…'.
Example
열심히 공부했는데도 시험에 떨어졌어요.
Even though I studied hard, I failed the exam.
