And, while — the written -(으)며
Taught in Level 4, Unit 5: Technology and everyday life (written style)
in the plain style, -고 and -(으)면서 still sound like speech. Articles and essays join their clauses with -(으)며, which does both jobs: 'and' and 'while'. It is on nearly every line of a news report, and you will need it for the essays of the coming units.

서울은 한국의 수도이며 인구가 가장 많은 도시이다.
Seoul is the capital of Korea and the city with the largest population.
