Just when I was …ing
in L4-U08 you learnt -(으)려던 참이다, 'I was just about to'. When you tell the story afterwards, you hang something on that moment: 'I was just about to call, and then …'. That is the job of -던 차에.
Example
배가 고프던 차에 친구가 김밥을 나눠 줬어요.
Just when I was hungry, my friend shared some gimbap with me.
