the new machine has habits — once it stops, it stays stopped — and Bori sees a dreaded day coming for Nabi. Korean has a pattern for each: -았/었다 하면 for 'every time, without fail', and -는 날에는 for 'if that day ever comes'.
Example
우리 할머니는 시장에 갔다 하면 반찬을 열 가지씩 사 오세요.
Whenever my grandmother goes to the market, she comes back with ten different side dishes.
