Now that … — a settled fact that decides what follows

Taught in Level 5, Unit 1: The new lease

a contract, a job offer, a promise — once something is settled, certain things follow from it. -(으)니까 gives a reason; -(으)ㄴ/는 이상 says 'since this is now a fact, there is no way round what comes next'. Grandma Soonja uses it to refuse to bend her own clause, and Hoya uses it to accept his new job.

Example

  • 한국에서 일하는 이상 서류 정리는 피할 수 없어요.

Since I work in Korea, there's no avoiding the paperwork.
